"I found this buried under some sand at the beach. I was really looking for a lens that fell out of my glasses, but instead found this enigmatic note. I’m [not] sure what’s meant by “the computer said you would be born…” but it’s a really moving letter. I wonder if it was lost or if it was left in the sand on purpose."

Happy Hammock Babies
I am working in the Peruvian Amazon until the end of March. In every home in the villages where I am working you can find a hammock or two tied to the ceiling. You learn to love them fast! Mothers use these to rock their children to sleep. If a baby begins to cry they are picked up and placed in the hammock where they are gently rocked until they calm down or fall asleep. A man told me a story about teaching his childhood pet, a woolly monkey, to rock his 2 year old little sister in the hammock with his tail. (For those of you concerned about the pet trade-- the monkey's mother was eaten by a harpy eagle and he rescued the baby from the jungle)
This boy is 1 1/2 years old. He just woke up from a relaxing nap in the hammock.
When they are smaller they place two sticks at the ends of the hammock so that their faces are not covered by the fabric.
The jungle is full of really cute babies.

Chigualo
"Despite a common stereotype, death of a loved one can provoke some of the most culturally diverse forms of emotion and social ritual. The video is rare footage of the Chigualo ceremony, a mourning ritual for children aged less than seven-years-old who have just passed away from the Afrocolombian community of the Pacific coast of Colombia....The belief behind the ceremony is that when young children die they become angels and go straight to heaven. Therefore, these deaths are not an occasion for sadness, as many might assume, but a cause for a goodbye celebration. You can see in the video that the Chigualo involves upbeat rhythms, singing, games and dancing – including passing the dead baby between people at the ceremony."
"Although death is perhaps the only experience guaranteed to be universal, our reaction to it is one of the most diverse. Consequently, respect comes in many forms."
